Moving into a new home is an exciting big step to take. Before you start packing, be sure to consider these important tips.
Packing Supplies
Be sure you have all the supplies you need for your move before you begin to pack. Set yourself up with boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper. Be careful not to overstuff any boxes and always check the weight limit. If boxes are left too heavy, they can break open or be impossible to lift. Use carts with swivel wheels to easily transport larger loads and move multiple items at a time. Get a large black marker to label the boxes as you pack items away. This way you can easily see what each box contains and make it easier for movers to identify fragile items that must be handled with care. If you run out of boxes, durable trash bags make for an excellent way to carry items like clothes, linens, pillows, and cushions.
Professional Movers
Be sure you have a large enough truck or van to move your items from your old place to your new home. While you may have more control of things making the move yourself, be prepared for the physical labor and heavy lifting involved. Hiring professional movers can take a lot off your plate. Always research the company you are considering working with and pay close attention to the contract provided. The contract should cover rates, additional charges, liability for possessions, pickup information, delivery information, and more. If anything is damaged during transport, your items will not be covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy. Consider purchasing moving insurance or relocation insurance to further protect your belongings.
Walk Through
Before you move into your new home, be sure to do a walk-through to make sure everything is set up properly. While the house is still empty, you can easily take measurements and accurately plan where the furniture will go. Create a plan to unpack in an organized and efficient manner. During your walk-through, check that all agreed-upon repairs were completed and nothing is broken or left out of order. If you are moving in with pets or children, now is a great time to set up any safety precautions. Cover any sharp edges or outlets and block off dangerous areas with baby gates. Be sure all scissors, box cutters, and other packing supplies are safely stored away.
